Which motif/scene is typical Berlin for you?
In twenty-five years of living in Berlin, my range of experiences includes everything from heading to another party after playing a DJ set in nightclubs in Mitte and Kreuzberg at 6 a.m. to pushing a stroller through Prenzlauer Berg to the playground—and everything in between.
What makes Berlin unique for you?
I think Berlin is currently—despite all its problems—perhaps the most liberal and democratic city. Berlin’s openness and acceptance of different lifestyles and cultures create a unique atmosphere that makes everyone feel welcome, no matter where they come from.
Your favorite place in Berlin is ...
In a city that is constantly changing, unfortunately, there are always beloved places that disappear over time, but many have remained, and new ones have been added. For example, I love the Rose Garden in the Tiergarten, the French toast at Julius in Wedding, the atmosphere in the Hansaviertel and the Academy of Arts, and the exhibitions at C/O Berlin in Amerika Haus.
CHRISTIAN WERNER is a Berlin-based photographer. Writing about his work, cultural critic Adriano Sack observed, “His images are among the most exciting that contemporary German photography has to offer.” Since the late 1990s Werner has been an integral part of the city’s cultural landscape. His passion for portraying fascinating people has led him to photograph celebrities such as Billie Eilish, M.I.A., Bret Easton Ellis, Harun Farocki, and Susan Sarandon for 032c, Harper’s Bazaar, Interview, Numéro, SSENSE, ZEITmagazin, and other German and international outlets. Werner has also published his works in several thematic books including LOS ANGELES (2019, Korbinian Verlag), STILLLEBEN BRD (2016, Kerber Verlag), and BONN.
